{mosimage}MichBoogie is back with her thoughts on 50's newest tirade, rappers getting reality shows and how the underground/indie circuit is killing 'em!
This week, I’ve been up and down with the state of hip hop. What’s funny though, it seems the mainstream continues to piss me off while the underground/impendent scene just seem to do everything right. Let me talk about the ups from underground music for me and the serious downs from the mainstream this week. So, I’d rather knock out the dumb shit first.
50 Cent was recently on Shade45 Radio stirring up a whole crock pot of unnecessary beef with old foes and legend ones. I also have to add, the DJ from Shade45 whoever he was didn’t make it better. He was really stirring up the shit and this reminds me of an incident with Angie Martinez a couple of years back. DJs need to have more neutral positions especially when this is going to get back to the artists being dissed, what is the DJ going to do than? Stick to spinning Top 25 Billboard records; don’t get involved with the beef of wack ass artists.
Now back to 50 on Shade45. 50 went on dissing Ja Rule, Fat Joe, but what was really weird, he dissed P. Diddy and Nas and Kelis. The comments towards Diddy just were confusing as hell. He commented saying Diddy “used to be cute” and “he even made Biggie cute” back in the day. I don’t want to quote Cam’Ron but wow, no homo dawwgie. He than went on to misquote Diddy’s top selling cologone Unforgivable as Forever, and said Diddy sold tons of pounds of ProActive. It’s really unclear if he was actually dissing him or not. He also ran his mouth about Jay-Z and American Gangster. He said Jay-Z used marketing money for his new album and let the rest of the Def Jam roster. He then moves on to say Nas has no buzz saying his greatest hits album flopped but tried to backtrack saying it was only because of weak fourth-quarter sales. To make matters worse, he brings in Kelis and her dropping from her record label, claiming both her and Nas were “cold as ice.” 50 also dropped rumors of Pharrell sleeping with Kelis and there is a video of Kelis being gangbanged. But being the classic corporate slave he is, he found time to plug some new website of his and a G-Unit album (yes..thats what hip hop needs—a new G-Unit album.)
To cut this off, 50 is basically trying to reclaim some turf after his “floppage” on Curtis and being outsold by Kanye West. He also retracted on retiring as part of a “bet” set between the two and tries to label the music as a G-Unit work, not a solo product. It’s a shame what rap niggas do for fame © Common.
Snoop Dogg is going to have a show on the E! Network titled Fatherhood and its airing this week. I don’t think I need to say much about this. What’s with giving all these rappers/hip hop artists reality shows? We have Run’s House, Salt N Pepa have a show, Flava of Love, Gotti’s Way with Irv Gotti, and now Snoop Dogg. Has hip hop music been that assimilated with pop culture of the 00s? Hip Hop artists are just becoming pop references for blooper reels from their shows instead of putting out classic material. It’s a sad year for hip hop.
Rumor has it that Def Jam had some lay-offs according to allhiphop.com. All I can say is, I hope it’s not true because there have been some really good releases at the moment.
For the good things, it’s been all about the underground. That’s because I’ve been discovering music that makes me so happy, I can actually forget about the monstrosities mentioned above.
First album I discovered was a duo joint by a group called The Unspoken Heard. This group consists of producer Blue Black and rapper Asheru. If you don’t know who that is, Asheru is the cat that does the Boondocks theme song. Trust me; it only gets better on their album, 48 Months. It’s a collection of sharp spoken word lyrics on neo-soul infused hip hop beats. I don’t want to go into some long ass review but check out that album. Track Runners off that album>>>>>>>>life. 7 minutes of real hip hop music.
Another artist I just discovered would be Jay Electronia, an artist from my hometown of New Orleans. He is the first artist signed to Erykah Badu’s label and dropped an EP titled StyleWars. Its sick as hell and this dude has so much talent and raw potential. It made me happy to see that New Orleans wasn’t just filled with Lil’ Wayne wannabes (let me say this as well, don’t strive to be like Lil’ Wayne, he is garbage as fuck.) Anyways, this album is floating around everywhere so you will be able to find it if you want to hear some great ass hip hop.
Last but not least, Tony Yayo accused Ghostface of not writing Supreme Clientele, Ghostface’s most acclaimed hip hop album. So in response to what was said, Ghostface had this to say “He couldn't make an album, you feel me? I made Supreme Clientele what it is. Those are my stories, based around whatever they're based upon. It's me… But, Yayo can suck a fat dick. Tell him I said that” Not the most mature comment, but it was a great one nonetheless.
That’s about it for me this week; I just also noticed that this is long as hell. Oh well, keep on pushing people. Real Hip Hop Lives.
